The Victoria
Stars of the Women's PCSL earned their first victory with a
come from behind win in front of 200 fans at SMUS on Sunday.
The visiting Kelowna Predators opened the scoring at only the
5th minute on a 30 yard free kick that beat Stars Keeper Meghan
Stewart in the top left hand corner of the net. But it didn't
take long for the Stars to equalize when 6 minutes later Stars
midfielder Tera Kasubuchi played a brilliant through ball for
Selina Good who raced in from the wing and neatly tucked her
shot in to the far corner of the goal. It was all one way traffic
after that as the Stars led by Kasubuchi and veteran midfielder
Terry Archer produced several scoring chances when just before
the half Lisa Sharp scored her first of 2 after winger Kelly
Nicholson sent in a far post cross for Sharp to leap above 2
defenders and head into the Kelowna goal. The onslaught continued
in the 2nd half when Sharp took a through ball from team captain
Jackie Cunningham and spun her defender then struck a volley
from the top of the 18 to put the Stars up by 2. Despite the
numerous chances made by Victoria's talented midfield and forwards,
it was the defenders that earned the most praise as the Kelowna
team were allowed only 2 shots in the game, both from free kicks
from 30 yards out. And when Kate Hambleton scored the 4th goal
with a nice chip to beat the keeper at the far post with 10
minutes remaining, there was no doubt as to the deep talent
this young Victoria team has. "I used all 18 players today,
and it didn't affect our shape at all." stated Stars coach
Lou Garraway. "With this being our first game ever in this
league I was impressed by our hard work and the fact that we
took being down a goal in stride and came back to post such
an impressive win. I think these players should be very proud
of what they accomplished here today."
Next up for the Stars will be Kamloops on Saturday, June 2,
2:00pm at SMUS.
